The Quietest Dishwashers of 2026 (and What dBA Actually Means)

Dishwasher noise is measured in dBA, and the difference between 44 and 39 is bigger than it looks. Here is what the numbers mean and the quietest models you can actually buy in 2026.

If your kitchen opens onto a living space, dishwasher noise is the spec you'll notice every single night. It's measured in dBA (A-weighted decibels), and because the scale is logarithmic, small-looking differences are large in practice.

What the dBA numbers mean

  • 46-50 dBA: Audible. Fine for a closed-off kitchen; you'll hear it from the next room.
  • 44 dBA: "Very quiet." The mainstream premium target, a soft hum.
  • 42 dBA: "Ultra quiet." You have to listen for it.
  • 38-39 dBA: Near-silent. You'll usually only know it's running by the floor light some models project.

Every 3 dBA roughly halves the sound energy, so a 42 dBA machine is meaningfully quieter than a 45 dBA one, not "a little."

The quietest models worth buying

Bosch tops Consumer Reports' dishwasher rankings in 2026, and it owns the quiet end of the market:

  • The Bosch 800 Series SHX78CM5N runs at 42 dBA with a flexible 3rd rack and Bosch's CrystalDry system that actually dries plastics. The sweet spot of quiet, dry, and price.
  • The Bosch Benchmark SHV89B73UC is the near-silent flagship at 38 dBA, panel-ready so it disappears into your cabinetry.
  • The Miele G 5008 SCU is the European alternative, Miele builds its own dishwashers to a 20-year design life, and it took the top spot on Consumer Reports' 2026 list.
  • Prefer a different look? Samsung's DW80R9950US hits 39 dBA with its Linear Wash system.

Don't ignore drying

Quiet is half the story, drying is where cheap dishwashers fall down. Bosch's CrystalDry and Miele's AutoOpen (the door cracks at the end of the cycle) both get plastics dry without a heating element, which also keeps them quiet. If you've ever opened a dishwasher to wet Tupperware, this is the upgrade you feel.

Buying tip

Panel-ready models (like the Benchmark) cost more and need a custom cabinet panel, but they're how you make the dishwasher vanish in an open kitchen. Compare all dishwashers across retailers, and set a price alert on your pick, dishwashers discount hard around holiday weekends.
